Gotta hand it to Michael Bublé that man sure knows how to put on a show. Not too many gimmicks or sound effects, just a brilliant bunch of musicians, a velvety smooth voice, a cheeky demeanour & a heart of gold.
On arrival I had just missed the man himself, outside in the foyer posing with fans for photos & signing autographs for anyone who wanted them. Reminded me of his sound check at the MCG during grand final rehearsals in 2005 when he did the same after putting in an impromptu gig for the staff & volunteers at the ground on the day!
Michael Bublé's opening support act was the inimitable Naturally 7 This is a vocal group who only use their voices to not only mimic musical instruments but also perform incredible acapella wizardry of original songs and some amazing covers of some popular hits! They had us up & dancing after a couple of songs.
When the main act finally came out, it was nothing short of spectacular... A touch of Rhapsody In Blue for the intro before the curtain was raised & a row of flames lit up the stage for a split second, as Michael ripped into his first song "Fever" this was the only elaborate staging, then it was just a bit of clever lighting, some moving portions of stage. This is a show celebrating music & vocals.
After that, Michael settled into some swing classics & then began lightening the mood with lots of banter. During that he managed to spot a little girl holding a colourful sign, he asked for her to be brought up to the front of the stage where he posed for photos for the girl's mum. Then he signed the sign and joked that he didn't put it a name on it so she could sell it on eBay when she was older.
Michael was responding to shout outs from members of the crowd constantly. He loves to interact with the fans! His humor was a little toned down on account that his parents were at the show & he didn't want to embarrass them. LOL Cheeky bugger!
Toward the end of the show, Naturally 7 came back out & did a few acapella songs together with Michael. My fav was the Jackson 5's "I Want you Back"
After his encore, Michael again finished with an acapella version of his favourite Leon Russell song. Totally unaccompanied, no microphone, no amplifiers, just a man & his golden voice.
Again everyone left the show with smiles from ear to ear, some clutching onto the little red & white hearts that were shot out all over the venue earlier that evening.
Thank you Michael!
